Background of the Study

Substance abuse remains a pervasive issue worldwide, with a devastating impact on individuals, families, and societies. In Nigeria, the prevalence of substance abuse, including the misuse of alcohol, opioids, and illicit drugs, has led to a public health crisis (Adebayo & Musa, 2023). In Taraba State, the rise in substance use disorders (SUDs) has prompted a demand for effective rehabilitation interventions. Substance abuse rehabilitation typically involves a combination of medical detoxification, psychological counseling, and social reintegration, where nurses play a central role in the provision of care (Olalekan & Bello, 2023).

Nurse-led interventions, which include counseling, education, and supportive care, are integral to the rehabilitation process. Nurses in rehabilitation centers are often tasked with managing withdrawal symptoms, administering medications, providing emotional support, and facilitating counseling sessions for substance-abusing individuals (Okonkwo & Yusuf, 2024). Research suggests that nurse-led interventions are particularly effective when tailored to the individual’s specific needs, promoting both physical and psychological recovery (Usman & Akinwale, 2024). However, despite their important role, the specific impact of nurse-led interventions on substance abuse rehabilitation outcomes in Taraba State has not been fully evaluated.

This study aims to assess the impact of nurse-led interventions on rehabilitation outcomes for individuals with substance use disorders in Taraba State’s rehabilitation centers, identify the challenges nurses face in this process, and propose ways to improve the effectiveness of these interventions.

Statement of the Problem

Substance abuse continues to affect a significant proportion of the population in Taraba State, yet effective rehabilitation programs remain scarce. Despite the crucial role of nurses in managing patients undergoing substance abuse treatment, their interventions and the effectiveness of their care in improving rehabilitation outcomes remain underexplored (Adebayo & Musa, 2023). Many rehabilitation centers face challenges such as a shortage of trained personnel, limited resources, and the stigma surrounding substance abuse, which hampers the ability to deliver effective care. As a result, substance abuse rehabilitation outcomes are often suboptimal.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of nurse-led interventions on substance abuse rehabilitation outcomes in Taraba State rehabilitation centers.

  2. To identify the challenges nurses face in implementing effective substance abuse rehabilitation interventions.

  3. To recommend strategies to enhance nurse-led interventions in improving substance abuse rehabilitation outcomes.

Research Questions

  1. What is the impact of nurse-led interventions on substance abuse rehabilitation outcomes in Taraba State rehabilitation centers?

  2. What challenges do nurses face in implementing substance abuse rehabilitation interventions in Taraba State?

  3. What strategies can improve nurse-led interventions in substance abuse rehabilitation in Taraba State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurse-led interventions significantly improve rehabilitation outcomes for individuals with substance use disorders in Taraba State rehabilitation centers.

  2. Nurses face significant challenges in implementing effective substance abuse rehabilitation interventions in Taraba State.

  3. Enhancing the training and resources available to nurses will improve the effectiveness of substance abuse rehabilitation outcomes in Taraba State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on rehabilitation centers in Taraba State and the role of nurses in substance abuse rehabilitation. Limitations may include regional differences in rehabilitation services, variability in nurse training, and potential biases in self-reported data from staff and patients.

Definitions of Terms

  • Substance Use Disorder (SUD): A medical condition characterized by an individual’s dependence on or addiction to alcohol, drugs, or other substances.

  • Nurse-led Intervention: A rehabilitation approach where nurses lead the care and treatment of patients, including medication management, counseling, and support.

  • Rehabilitation Outcome: The measurable results of rehabilitation efforts, including improvements in physical health, psychological well-being, and social reintegration.
